Pilgrimage Resources
Sister Angela de Fatima
Sister Angela de Fatima speaks to “Pilgrims for Peace” early in the
pilgrimage as her talk on the Message of Fatima sets the tone for the
pilgrimage. Besides her role as Superior of her Convent, the Alianca
de Santa Maria, in Fatima, Sr. Angela is a medical doctor, working
one day a week in the Emergency Room in the hospital in Leiria. She
works with Father Louis Kondor, Vice-Postulator for the cause for
the children, researching medical aspects of documentations
presented to the Postulation Office.  She is pictured with Pope John
Paul II, whom she visited in November 2004 to bring documentation
of a healing of a young child from Juvenile Diabetes. This healing
will be studied in Rome and could be approved as the miracle that will
be used toward the canonization of Jacinta and Francisco.
Armando and Fernanda Mendes
Armando and Fernanda are key to the success of Pilgrims For Peace
pilgrimages to Fatima. Armando’s expertise, knowledge, and love of Our
Lady and the Fatima Message, makes him a valuable asset to the
pilgrimage. Armando and Fernanda assist in the planning, determining the
schedule, and making our reservations both at their hotel and at the
various other hotels and restaurants that we utilize when we are on the
road. They also serve as speakers, specifically, Fernanda on Alexandrina
da Costa of Balasar, as she is personally involved in the story of
Alexandrina.
Carlos Evaristo
Carlos Evaristo is a well-known historian and writer. Carlos and his family were known to Sister Lucia and the
sisters in St. Teresa’s Convent in Coimbra. Carlos was the translator at the meeting between Sister Lucia and a
Bishop and Cardinal from India, who questioned Sr. Lucia about the validity of the Consecration that was made
by Pope John Paul II on March 25, 1984.   Carlos and his family have run the Castle Program in Ourem, and
Carlos appears frequently on radio and TV in Fatima when there are newsworthy programs broadcast.
Carlos is Curator of St. Stephen’s Church in Santarem, where the miracle of the Holy Eucharist occurred.
Father Jose dos Santos Valinho
Father Valinho, Sister Lucia’s nephew and a Salesian Priest, spends time with our groups,
especially in Aljustrel where both he and the shepherd children grew up, and in Balasar and Braga,
two places where he has personal connections.  He tells stories of his family and Sister Lucia’s
family. Father Valinho is another key to the success of the pilgrimage. He is pictured next to the
place where the sheep were kept beside Lucia’s home in Aljustrel.
Father John DeMarchi (deceased)
Father DeMarchi, author of “Fatima From The Beginning” and “Fatima, The Full Story” was responsible for laying the
groundwork for the birth of “Pilgrims For Peace” pilgrimages. Fr. DeMarchi was instrumental in leading us to people
and places pertinent to the story and the Message. He passed away on January 1, 2003, but his spirit lives on in the
hearts of those who knew him and loved him.
Father Edwin Gordon
Father Gordon is a priest from England who celebrates Mass in the Divine Mercy Chapel in the Solar da
Marta Hotel every day at noon.  Fr. Gordon lost his sight as a result of diabetes; however, he has written two
books;
Catechism of the Holy Rosary and Upon this Rock.
Antonio Marto
Antonio Marto, a family member of Jacinta and Francisco’s family, is a security guard in the
Sanctuary in Fatima. Antonio has spoken to Pilgrims For Peace about his experiences with events in
the Sanctuary, specifically his participation in the funeral of Father DeMarchi in 2003, and the
translation of Sister Lucia from Coimbra to the Basilica in Fatima. He was one of the six guards
(middle facing) who placed Sister Lucia’s coffin in the tomb next to Blessed Jacinta.
Antonia Oliveira
Antonia registers “Pilgrims For Peace” pilgrimage group in the office in the Sanctuary in Fatima (SEPE) and
assists with and ensures the participation of our group in Sanctuary scheduled activities.
Maria dos Anjos
Maria dos Anjos is the sister of Father Valinho and the niece of Sister Lucia.  She assists pilgrims as they
visit the home of her Aunt Lucia in Aljustrel. She and her sister, Maria Rosa, live across the street from
Lucia’s home in Aljustrel. Both are pictured here with Father Valinho. Maria dos Anjos is on the left.
John Marto (deceased)
John Marto, brother of Jacinta and Francisco, died just weeks before his sister and brother were beatified. He was the brother
who was in Valinhos on August 19th when Our Lady appeared to the 3 children.
Sister Leopolda
Sister Leopolda assists English speaking groups who tour the Light and Peace Museum in the Sanctuary.
Sister Leopolda is from the Philippines.
Father Louis Kondor, SVD
Father Louis Kondor, Vice-Postulator for the cause for Blesseds Jacinta and
Francisco, resides near the Sanctuary. There is a viewing theater and a photo
museum containing pictures from the times of the apparitions. He is shown
here with his friend, Father Valinho. Fr. Kondor, along with Sr. Angela, took
documentation of a healing to Rome to give to Pope John Paul II in November
2004. Father Kondor speaks to “Pilgrims for Peace” and Sr. Angela translates.
Bishop D. Serafim de Sousa Ferreira e Silva makes it a point to visit with Pilgrims For
Peace when we go to Fatima. He celebrated the Mass of Translation of Sister Lucia from Coimbra to
Fatima and the special Mass on the Feast Day of the Children, February 20, 2006. Bishop Serafim
retired in the summer of 2006
AND Father Cesar works with the Sanctuary and is always
available to help the English speaking participants in the International Masses and Rosaries in the
Sanctuary.
Sister Diane
Sister Diane has been with the Mosterio Pio XII, Irish Dominican sisters, since it was founded
in Fatima over 50 years ago. The Irish nuns were responsible for translating Sister Lucia’s
Memoirs into English. When the Holy Father comes to Fatima, he arrives by helicopter and lands
on the soccer field just outside the back of the convent. Our visit here includes Mass,
Benediction, tea and cookies, and shopping in the convent store, as their books are all in English.
The sisters are also called the “Dominican Nuns of the Perpetual Rosary."
Father Carlos Azevedo
Father Azevedo is the Chaplain at Dona Estefania Hospital in Lisbon where Jacinta died.
He speaks to our groups, takes us to the place near where Jacinta died, and celebrates
Mass in the Chapel in the Hospital for us.
Sister Martina
Sister Martina at the Convent of the Apparitions in Pontevedre Spain now operates the convent as a guest house. On some
pilgrimages, our group stays overnight in this convent. It is a privilege to sleep under the same roof at Our Lady appeared to
Sister Lucia in 1925 when She gave her the Five First Saturdays devotion.
Sister Isabel, Sister Irene, Sister Grace
These three sisters are the externs at the convent of St. Teresa in Coimbra where Sister Lucia lived for 57 years. They assist
pilgrims who come for Mass or to visit the chapel, prepare the altar for Mass and ensure that the pilgrims have the opportunity
to enhance their pilgrimage by being in this holy place. We know that Our Lady appeared to Sr. Lucia just before she died here in
this convent.
