Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, stands. Construction on this cathedral was begun when the
dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed by Pius IX in 1854 around the time of the
apparitions in Lourdes. There is an outdoor altar overlooking the town of Braga, where the Holy
Father, John Paul II, celebrated Mass.
