Day Trips
Santarem
In Santarem, St. Stephen’s Church houses the actual Host of the
Eucharistic Miracle. Mass, Benediction and Veneration of the Host is
scheduled.
Carlos Evaristo, Curator of the Museum of the Most Holy
Miracle of Santarem, was instrumental in renovating the church and in
preparation of the articles for veneration above the altar. A visit to the
home where the miracle occurred is included in this visit.
Nazare
Nazare is a fishing village on the Atlantic. This is a lunch stop, and a visit
to the Church of Our Lady of Nazare above the town and some shopping
is scheduled.
Juncal
St. Michael’s Church in Juncal is where it is believed that the Host and
Chalice were taken by the Angel of Peace in 1916, to give the three
children of Fatima Holy Communion.
Ortiga
A few miles from Fatima, on a hill, a miracle occurred many years ago. A
small Chapel was built here according to the wishes of Our Lady. We
pray the rosary, or say the stations in the Chapel.
Ourem
In Ourem, a visit to the Castle, the Saint Nuno’s Museum, and the
Marian Museum are included in the schedule. The reliquary contains
many valuable relics, including a room for relics and memorabilia from
Fatima. Carlos Evaristo also speaks to our group on the history of the
Fatima story, the history of Portuguese, and his knowledge and
experiences with Sister Lucia.
Coimbra
St. Teresa’s Carmelite Convent in Coimbra is where Sr. Lucia lived for
57 years before she died on Feb. 13, 2005. In the Chapel in this
Convent are the two famous statues, one of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary and the other, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The statue of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary was sculpted according to Sister Lucia’s
recollection of how Our Lady looked when She appeared her.
Monasteries
Visits to Batalha, Alcobaca, or Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon are part
of the schedule if time permits. Each Monastery has a special history.
Lisbon
In Lisbon, the pilgrims spend their final day of the pilgrimage visiting
the
Poor Clares Convent, where Jacinta stayed just before she died;
Estefania Hospital, where she died on February 20, 1920; and the
Church of Our Lady of Angels where Jacinta’s body was taken for a few
days after she died and before being taken to Ourem for burial, and St.
Anthony’s birthplace; and the Cathedral of Lisbon.
